Understanding the Gender Affirmative Model of Care

Gender Affirmative Model of Care means not making assumptions about what a young person’s gender is or should be. It allows them time and space to explore and understand the difference between gender identity and gender expression. After all, a child who shows some gender “creative” behavior may or may not identify as a different gender. They many never wish to transition. Similarly, a child who is insistent in their gender identity may not make stereotypical masculine or feminine choices in hobbies, clothes, or friends.  A Gender Affirmative Model does not rely on social expectations to define care, but rather affirms the child as they are and for what they say.
